The College of Science community recently gathered to celebrate this year's Alumni Award recipients. These individuals have enriched many lives through their professional achievements, impact and service. They embody our vision to extend the reach and impact of science by improving life for the people of Oregon and beyond.

The annual Health Professions Fair will take place on April 23, 2024 from 10:00am–2:00pm at the OSU Dixon Recreation Center Lower Gym.

The College of Science community recently gathered to celebrate this year’s Alumni Award recipients. These alumni distinguished themselves through their groundbreaking research, strong leadership and efforts to enhance equity, access and inclusion.

Rather than being swayed by conventional markers of success such as titles and salaries, Parisa Khosropour (B.S., ‘89) advocates for the relentless pursuit of personal excellence. Khosropour is the recipient of the 2023 Distinguished Alumni Achievement Award for her professional accomplishments and mentorship that has brought honor, distinction and visibility to the College of Science.

Scientists led by an Oregon State College of Science researcher have developed a new electrolyte that raises the efficiency of the zinc metal anode in zinc batteries to nearly 100%, a breakthrough on the way to an alternative to lithium-ion batteries for large-scale energy storage.

Students from Oregon State University along with thousands of other attendees from across the nation were welcomed to the National Diversity in STEM (NDiSTEM) Conference Oct. 27, 2022. The event was built to serve as a reminder that culture and science are not mutually exclusive or contradictory. NDiSTEM asserted that science is not a place to shed culture, but a place where it should thrive.

Honors college senior Alice Lulich graduates with three years of inorganic chemistry research experience on metal organic frameworks (MOFs), versatile compounds with diverse environmental and medical applications.

Oregon State funds more high-impact undergraduate research experiences than any other university in the state.

Chuck Armstrong graduated from OSU with a degree in basic science in 1966, having majored in chemistry. He credits his science education for teaching him how to think and develop the skills he would use in his career. “In the sciences, you are taught how to critically and analytically think,” he says.

The COVID-19 pandemic is creating a surging interest in science and medicine, attracting a new generation of students to a career in medicine. Enrollment in the College of Science’s pre-med program at Oregon State University has also remained high, with numbers averaging 90-100 pre-med students annually since 2019.

The College of Science awarded 38 SURE Science awards of $5,500 to each student to conduct summer research in 2018.

Chemist May Nyman is part of a five-year, $12.5 million National Nuclear Security Administration grant to study nuclear stewardship.
