This course covers thermodynamics, electrochemistry, solutions, kinetic theory of gases, chemical kinetics, quantum theory and statistical mechanics, molecular structure and spectroscopy.

Since prior completion of MATH 254 or its equivalent at another institution is an institutional/departmental requirement for enrollment in CH 440, the chemistry department asks that all prospective students, both degree-seeking and non-degree-seeking students, provide documentation verifying completion of the course prerequisites. The prerequisite override mechanism enables the department to accommodate students who have completed their prerequisites at another institution.
