To juniors or seniors in the Department of Chemistry with at least a 3.0 GPA. Peter B. Culter (OSU '59) was the first scientist to detect radiation over the US from the Chernobyl reactor explosion and contributed to the use of radiation physics in the detection of rare birth defects. This scholarship was established by Mr. Culter’s family to commemorate his life.

Awarded to second or third-year students who reside in the United States. This scholarship is awarded annually by the Department of Chemistry to one or more undergraduate students majoring in Chemistry in recognition of outstanding scholastic achievement in Chemistry. Recipients must be residents of the United States, enrolled as full-time students in the College of Science with either junior or senior standing in Chemistry while receiving the scholarship, and have a cumulative GPA of 3.0. The scholarship is renewable for one year provided the recipient continues to be enrolled full-time in the College of Science, maintains a cumulative GPA of not less than 3.0, and notifies the Honors and Awards Committee of their desire that the renewal be granted. Special consideration is given to students who have financial need.

The ACS-Hach Land Grant Undergraduate Chemistry Teacher Scholarship is awarded annually by the Department of Chemistry to one or more undergraduate students majoring in Chemistry with the Chemistry Education option in recognition of outstanding scholastic achievement. Recipients must be citizens of the United States or permanent residents enrolled as full-time Chemistry majors that express an interest in becoming a High School chemistry teacher, and have a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or greater. Students are selected on the bases of chemistry aptitude, interest, and need. The scholarship is renewed annually provided the recipient continues to be enrolled full-time as a chemistry major, maintains a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or greater, and applies for renewal. Undergraduate students are limited to three one-year awards. A special one-year renewal is available to students enrolled full-time in the OSU MS in Science Education program provided they maintain a GPA of 3.0 greater and apply for renewal. Jack Stephenson created this scholarship in honor of his father, who spent time in Oregon just before WWI. His father told him wonderful stories about Oregon. When Jack graduated from UW Madison and was looking at graduate programs in Chemistry, he opted for OSU. Jack and Charlene met at OSU, and although he was drafted after his first year at OSU, he was able to come back and complete his PhD after two years of Army service. Jack went to work for the CIA after graduation. Among other programs, he was involved with the K-129 submarine recovery project. Jack and Charlene moved back from DC after he retired.

This annual award recognizes the importance of scientific writing, particularly in each term of the Writing Intensive Courses that are Experimental Chemistry II (CH 462, CH 463, and CH 464) in the Integrated Lab Series at OSU Chemistry. One paper in each course is selected that best demonstrates the student’s ability to compose a professional paper of at least 2000 words through multiple aspects of writing, including brainstorming, drafting and revising. Each award includes an honorarium from the chemistry department and the top awardee is also recognized with the OSU Culture of Writing Award.
